A 19th-century solid oak cabinet in a Renaissance antique style with twelve individually hand-carved panels.
Description from the seller
A very impressive oak cabinet, dating from the 19th century, possibly with older elements or based on earlier (17th-century) examples.
Magnificent and exceptionally rich and completely hand-carved paneling.
The cabinet is built from solid oak and constructed using traditional techniques (finger- and pegged joints, hand-rasped and hand-planed wood). The construction is dismantleable, with the different components provided with hand-engraved assembly numbers, visible on several elements and characteristic of the original assembly.
A particularly notable and rare detail is the presence of a hand-engraved name, “Louis Detivelle,” which is visible on the furniture. This inscription contributes to the unique and historical character of the piece and may refer to a former owner, maker, or workshop.
The engraved name ‘Louis Detivelle’ may indicate French origin or influence, which adds to the historical and characterful whole.
The doors and panels are very uniquely richly decorated with deep relief work, including medallions with busts, bird motifs and gracefully worked tendril- and foliate-work. The variation and liveliness of the carving clearly confirm fully manual craftsmanship.
All panels are fully original and consistent in style, execution and aging, which suggests that the furniture as a whole has been preserved and is not composed of different parts.
Very exceptionally and visually impressive, built from twelve individually carved panels, each with a unique figurative representation in the form of a bust in a medallion.
The carving is characterized by a striking variation in faces, expressions and attributes, including headdresses, helmets and hairstyles, indicating a deliberate iconographic construction. The panels are framed by richly worked ornamentation with laurel wreaths, floral motifs and mythical animals, including dolphin-like figures and a prominent bird in the upper register.
The composition seems to refer to an allegorical depiction of man in different life stages and social roles, from youth and beauty to power, wisdom and mortality. This narrative structure, combined with the fact that each panel is unique, makes this piece particularly notable within its type.
The piece shows a beautiful, natural patina that has developed over the centuries. Inside there are clear signs of age, such as wear and historical woodworm traces (not active), consistent with its age. The cabinet was locally reinforced in the past, as is common with antiques of this age, without detracting from its character or appearance. The construction remains solid and functional.
Equipped with old wrought iron, including original hinges, key and lock.
An exceptionally decorative and collectible piece of furniture that is both aesthetically and historically very interesting.
Such a richly worked and narrative ensemble rarely appears on the market and constitutes a striking collectible within the category of early European furniture.
Shipping to islands or outside Europe available on request.
The cabinet will be fully dismantled for shipping. Everything will be safely packed and protected for delivery.
