Characteristic of this form of opals is their opalescence, which shines with intense rainbow flashes. Additionally, the base rock of the opal here is dark, grey to black, which gave it this name.
Black opals form, like other opals, from silica-rich fluids that crystallize in sedimentary or volcanic rocks. Their characteristic shimmer is due to water inclusions inside this mineral.
