Biography of Hoang Anh.
Born in 1984 in Thanh Hoa, Vietnam, lives and works in Hanoi
Originally from Thanh Hoa province, located 150 km south of Hanoi, Hoang Anh belongs to this pivotal generation of Vietnamese artists (the “8x” generation) who combine cultural heritage with contemporary abstraction. A graduate of the Vietnam Fine Arts University, he has established himself on Hanoi’s art scene with a bold approach to material and color.
Graduated from the Artistic Talent program (cohort 13) at Thanh Hoa Culture and Arts School
Graduated from the Painting department (cohort 48) of the Vietnam Fine Arts University
Style and Artistic Approach
Hoang Anh’s work is distinguished by an intense exploration of texture and movement. Although he explores varied themes such as landscapes, nature, and the female form, it is in abstraction that his expressive power is fully revealed:
• The energy of gesture: A painter of oils and acrylics, he frequently uses a palette knife to apply color in vigorous horizontal strokes. This gesture creates a nearly musical rhythm on the canvas.
• Chromatic contrasts: His work plays on the opposition between often neutral backgrounds (urban grays, textured whites) and bursts of primary colors — fiery reds, solar yellows, and deep blues — that seem to spring from the surface.
• Lyric abstraction: His compositions do not seek to reproduce reality, but to capture its emotional essence. His canvases often evoke ephemeral phenomena: the reflection of light on water, the vibrations of heat, or the bustle of a metropolis undergoing change.
Exhibitions and Recognition
An active and recognized artist, Hoang Anh regularly exhibits in prestigious Hanoi galleries and within national artistic collectives. His works are part of numerous private collections, both in Vietnam and internationally, charming with their ability to translate Eastern sensibility into a universal and modern language.
“Painting is, for me, a breath, a way to fix the invisible energy surrounding us.” — Hoang Anh
