Description from the seller
Kusu statuary, originating from the Kusu and Hemba peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is distinguished by a powerful, expressive style, marked by a search for balance between realism and symbolism. These sculptures, often carved in hard wood, mainly depict ancestral figures, chiefs, or protective spirits. Their characteristic features include oval faces with almond-shaped eyes, firm or slightly parted lips, and stylized bodies, sometimes adorned with scarifications or traditional jewelry.
Kusu statues play a central role in rituals related to ancestor worship and the legitimization of power. They embody the spirits of the deceased, serving as mediators between the living and the invisible world. Placed on altars or used during ceremonies, these works are considered vessels of vital force (nyama), capable of protecting the community and ensuring its prosperity.
Kusu art, with its understated aesthetics and spiritual depth, reflects values of wisdom, respect for tradition, and social cohesion. Today, these statues, sought after for their timeless beauty, testify to the cultural richness of the region’s peoples and their attachment to their ancestral heritage.
