Obsidian is a volcanic glass formed by the extremely rapid cooling of lava, which is always rich in silicate ions. Obsidian is a natural glass, completely similar to glass produced by humans.
A raw material highly sought in antiquity for the manufacture of sharp tools (primarily knives), it was one of the commodities that animated Mediterranean trade and sustained the economic life of the mining sites. Today it is still worked into small decorative objects, jewelry, and blades for scalpels.
