Crest / African helmet made of wood from the Mossi ethnic group of Burkina Faso.
A portion of Mossi masks depict wild animals such as the buffalo, the elephant, the lion which are the most common.
However, it is rarer to see domestic animals accorded the rank of ritual mask.
Zoömorphic animal masks such as the Ram, the Goat, the Horse, the Rooster, the Dog will nevertheless add additional symbolism to the masquerades, but also in some cases represent the animal that will be sacrificed.
Burkina Faso is a landlocked West African state bordered to the north and west by Mali, to the east by Niger, and to the south by Benin, Togo, Ghana and Ivory Coast.
The first Mossi empire was founded in the 15th century by Ghanaian invaders.
Formerly known as Upper Volta, the country’s name became Burkina Faso in 1984.
