Ancient Rome Gold solid gold roman necklace - 49 cm
This beautiful Roman gold necklace, 37,53 g, dating to the 1st-2nd century AD during the High Imperial Period, represents the excellence of goldsmithing of the time. Composed of a finely woven chain in a braided design, this style evidences both the Roman aesthetic sense and its technical mastery in jewellery making.
The necklace, weighing approximately 39 grams, reflects the sophistication and luxury that surrounded the elites of the Empire. It was more than just a decorative piece: this type of jewellery had connotations of social status, wealth, and power, usually worn by people of high standing in the Roman hierarchy. Its functional design with a hook-shaped clasp is not only practical, but also an example of the refinement in detail.
Gold, a symbol of wealth and eternity, was closely linked to power in Rome. This type of piece may have been worn by both men and women, highlighting the universality of the Roman taste for elegant jewellery. The Romans not only valued jewellery for its beauty, but also as a means of preserving wealth.
Acquired from a Spanish private collection, M.R.G in the 80's.
The piece includes authenticity certificate and Gold analysis (cf pictures ).
