Hélène Planquelle is a self-taught contemporary figurative painter whose works explore the delicate balance between pleasure and suffering in our relationship to others, from both an individual and collective perspective, through recurring themes such as emotional dependency, attachment, vulnerability, acceptance and rejection, violence, and power dynamics.
Although figurative, her work is conceptual by nature, drawing on a rich bedrock of philosophical, literary, and scientific references, in fields ranging from ethics to social sciences, including theories of attachment and evolutionary psychology.
The title of each series, most often a quotation (literary, poetic, or philosophical), creates a dialogue between each piece, thereby opening up the field of possible interpretations for the viewer.
