Rare Set of 12 French Table Knives in Cow Horn – Hammermark "PARIS" – Late 19th Century
Description of the Lot
A piece of history from Belle Époque French dining.
We are pleased to present this exceptional complete set of 12 antique table knives, dating to the end of the 19th century (circa 1880-1900). These items are not just cutlery, but witnesses to an era when craftsmanship and elegance were indispensable even in everyday objects.
Origin and Hammermark "PARIS"
Each blade bears clearly the percussion-engraved inscription "PARIS". This mark, typical of the period, identifies the prestigious cutlery or luxury Parisian shop that marketed the set. These knives were often produced by Thiers masters on commission for the capital market. The font confirms dating to the turn of the century.
Detailed Condition and Restoration Notes
The set is complete with all 12 original pieces, but requires care to restore its former splendor.
1. Carbon Steel Blades
Made from genuine carbon steel (not stainless), famous for edge retention but prone to oxidation.
Condition: They show a diffuse historic patina and dark oxidation spots (see photo 1 and 2).
Work needed: The blades require a thorough polish and cleaning with specific metal products.
2. Handles in Natural Horn
Splendid handles with natural honey-blond to brown veining.
Important Note (See Photos 3 and 4): As shown in the details, some handles have natural longitudinal cracks. Since horn is an organic material, these fissures are due to age and dehydration.
Work needed: It is advised to nourish the horn with vaseline oil or almond oil to stabilize it and enhance its luster.
3. Absence of the Box
Please note the set does not include the original box. It will be shipped with protective and professional packaging.
