Description from the seller
Constant Artz
Born Paris 03-06-1870 - Died 23-02-1951.
The watercolor is handmade, framed, with the glass removed.
Constant Artz is the painter of the well-known friendly and sunny scenes with a duck and youngsters at the edge of a canal.
Father Artz had studied with Jozef Israëls himself and during his Paris period was little influenced by his new surroundings. He mainly painted Dutch landscapes and Dutch rural life.
Constant attended the Hague Academy and then secured a place as a student in the studio of the painter Tony Offermans. Offermans was also a typical Hague painter in the Israëls style. Constant moved from The Hague to Delft in 1893.
Through his connection with Jozef Israëls, Father Artz knew a large number of painters, not the least of whom were not the first that came to mind. He also got along well with Willem Maris and Hendrik Willem Mesdag, who provided him with the necessary advice. Later Artz moved to Soestdijk. The support of the public of buyers helped Artz through the difficult crisis years for many artists. During the war he managed to support his family by exchanging paintings for food. Artz lived to a quite old age and died in 1951 in Soestdijk.
The watercolor is carefully packed and sent by registered mail. The dimensions are inclusive of the frame.
