Black opals occur, just like their differently colored counterparts, as rounded to knobby masses without any detectable crystal structure. Their beauty usually reveals itself only after the polishing of this material. Characteristic for this form of opals is their opalescence, which is expressed in intense rainbow flashes. Moreover, the host rock of the opal here is dark, gray to black, which earned it this name.

Black opals form, just like other opals, from silica-rich fluids that crystallize in sedimentary or igneous rocks. Their characteristic shimmer is due to water inclusions within the interior of this mineral.
