This is an exceptional and large antique Chinese porcelain basin, dating to the 19th century. The famille rose bowl features a lobed, foliate rim and is entirely hand-painted with intricate overglaze enamels in a palette of iron-red, rose-pink, and turquoise, and green, decorated with gilded highlights. ​ The exterior is decorated with a continuous narrative scene depicting courtisans. One primary scene shows three women in traditional dress gathered at a table in an outdoor setting, while another central scene features a woman playing a 'guqin' instrument accompanied by an assistant. The background is filled with traditional Chinese motifs, including blossoming cherry trees and landscapes. ​ The interior of the bowl is well-decorated, featuring central floral sprays and "mon" (crests).
