Antique caulking set from the Netherlands, circa 1880–1930, including two kalfater hammers, two breeuwbeitels and oakum, with beech wood and forged iron construction and a total weight of about 3 kg, in reasonable, heavily used condition with possible missing small parts.
Description from the seller
Antique caulking set – caulking hammer and caulking irons – shipbuilding tools with hemp (oakum) – ca. 1880–1930
Description:
An exceptionally atmospheric and authentic caulking tool set from traditional wooden shipbuilding, consisting of a caulking hammer, caulking irons (caulking irons) and a piece of hemp (oakum) as used in caulking.
The tools were used to drive hemp fibers between the seams of wooden ship planks to obtain a watertight seal. The combination of hammer, irons and hemp gives a rare, complete view of this craft.
The hammer shows clear signs of use on the head, typical of heavy professional use.
The irons have a wide edge and display a beautiful, well-worn patina appropriate to long-term use in a maritime working environment.
The set is presented in a context that illustrates its use in shipbuilding and underscores the historical application of the tool.
Period: circa 1880–1930
Materials: wood, steel/iron
Included: 2 caulking hammers, 2 caulking irons.
