Description from the seller
Antique calfat set – calfatting hammer and breeuw irons – shipbuilding tools with hemp (oakum) – circa 1880–1930
Description:
An exceptionally atmospheric and authentic set of calfatting tools from traditional wooden shipbuilding, consisting of a calfatting hammer, breeuw irons (caulking irons) and a piece of hemp (oakum) as used in calking.
The tools were used to drive hemp fibers into the seams of wooden ship planks to achieve a watertight seal. The combination of hammer, irons and hemp provides a rare complete view of this craft.
The hammer shows clear signs of use on the head, typical of intensive professional use.
The irons have a wide edge and display a beautiful, well-worn patina appropriate for long-term use in a maritime working environment.
The set is presented in a context that illustrates its use within shipbuilding and underscores the historical application of the tool.
