Khmer antique ritual bronze conch from the 12th century, 25.2 cm high with tripod nagas head, featuring a dancing Hevajra relief on the upper triangular part, in good condition and of authentic original provenance from France (Galerie A.S.M.), acquired in 2021.
Description from the seller
RITUAL CONCH SHELL WITH ITS TRIPOD
The conch with a lower, rounded portion, whose ends terminate in a fish tail and feature highly raised bands of pearls and overlapping floral decorations, rests on a tripod support with a naga-headed top. It is adorned on its triangular upper part with a relief representing the dancing deity Hevajra. These ritual bronze conches, like natural conches, served either as ceremonial vessels and implements for ritual lustrations, or as wind instruments capable of emitting the sacred sound OM. This conch, lacking an orifice at its end, clearly served the first function. This type of conch particularly served as a “vase” for pouring lustral waters during tantric Buddhist ceremonies especially popular under Jayavarman VII, see the “Tantric Art” section of Glory... A similar conch is represented in the Phnom Penh Museum, catalogued under number 149 in The Collections of the National Museum of Phnom Penh. Khmer Art, Cambodia, 12th/13th century Height with base: 25.2 cm – conch alone: 20.5 cm – Perfect condition Provenance: France, A.S.M. Gallery
