Australischer Opal cabochon ring in 925 sterling silver, weighing 2.05 g (10.25 ct), originating from Australia.
Description from the seller
Ring of Australian Opal / Cabochon / new
In 925 Sterling Silver Setting
Weight: 2.05 g / 10.25 ct
6.6 mm x 5.4 mm
New and unworn
Ring size:
U 57
UK P 1/2
US 8.0
Fr 17
Inner diameter: 18.1 mm
The opal is a mineral of the mineral class of “oxides and hydroxides.” As an amorphous solid, opal (like glass) has no crystal structure and usually appears as a massive vein-filling or nodular formation.
Opals are processed solely into jewelry stones.
The word opal was borrowed from the Latin opalus or the Greek ὀπάλλιος opallios for ‘precious stone’ and presumably goes back to upala from Sanskrit. According to Allan W. Eckert in his work The World of Opals, it referred to various rocks, while the early Magyars called opal mines opálbánya.
Opals were already considered highly valuable gemstones in ancient times, sometimes even valued higher than diamonds. Pliny the Elder wrote: “[…] it has a fire of its own, finer than that of the carbunculus, it possesses the purplish spark of the amethyst and the sea-green of the emerald and an overall incredible mixture of light.”
