Description from the seller
Icon of the Deësis (Christ in Majesty with intercessors), one of the most important compositions in Orthodox iconography.
Center: Christ enthroned (Pantocrator / Judge)
Sitting on the throne, blessing with the right hand.
In the left he usually holds the Gospel (here barely visible due to wear).
He is the Lord and judge of the world.
Left: The Virgin Mary (Theotokos)
In a posture of supplication, with the hand directed toward Christ.
Represents intercession for humanity.
Right: Saint John the Baptist
Also leaning toward Christ.
He is the forerunner and another great intercessor.
Theological meaning
The word “Deësis” (from Greek δέησις) means “supplication” or “intercession”.
The scene expresses:
Christ as merciful judge
Mary and John as intercessors for men
An image of the Last Judgment but in a hopeful key
It is a very common composition in:
Iconostases (central part)
Byzantine liturgical programs
Stylistic traits of your icon
Golden background → symbol of the divine and eternal
Frontality and hieratic pose → figures outside of time
Elongated proportions → spiritualization of the body
Inscriptions in Cyrillic → probable Russian origin
Visible wear → antiquity or prolonged devotional use
This icon is not narrative, but theological:
It does not tell a story, but presents a truth:
Christ listens to the supplication of humanity
Salvation is obtained through intercession and mercy
