Description from the seller
Important Victorian claret jug in silvered metal and cut crystal, Bacchus-decorated – England, late 19th century
Remarkable Victorian ewer dating from the second half of the 19th century, powerfully illustrating the taste for historicist styles and the rich decorative abundance characteristic of the era.
The body, in high-quality cut crystal, presents an elegant baluster shape highlighted by a deep diamond-and-star facet cut, offering sustained brilliance and excellent refraction of light. The crystal’s thickness, evident in the substantial weight of the piece, testifies to careful, solid production, typical of English or European workshops working for the British market at the end of the 19th century.
The mount, in silvered metal, stands out with an elaborately detailed neo-Renaissance-inspired decor. It is richly decorated with relief motifs: scrolls, lattice, as well as a mascaron depicting Bacchus (the wine god in Roman mythology), an element particularly coherent with the object’s function. The spout adopts the form of a grotesque mask, reinforcing the sculptural dimension of the whole.
The domed lid is topped with a heraldic lion holding a shield, a symbol of nobility and power, emblematic of Victorian aesthetics. The handle, finely worked, features naturalistic and botanical elements, ensuring an elegant and balanced grip.
The hinge mechanism of the lid is precise and functional, revealing high-quality craftsmanship. The piece is preserved in excellent condition, the crystal is intact (no brightness loss or flaws) and the silvering well preserved, with only light signs of use consistent with its age.
Height: 31.8 cm
Diameter: 9 cm
Weight: 1.903 kg
This ewer fully embodies the elegance of Victorian tabletop arts, combining refinement, execution quality and symbolic richness. The presence of Bacchus, the wine god, gives this piece rare and sought-after iconographic coherence, enhancing its appeal to 19th-century decorative arts enthusiasts.
Both a utilitarian object and a characterful decorative piece, it will naturally find its place in a quality collection or in a prestigious interior.
A remarkable piece representative of Victorian silversmithing expertise in tableware.
