An attractive and atmospheric piece for lovers of Lanooy and Dutch ceramics.
Christiaan Johannes (Chris) Lanooy (Sint Annaland, March 16, 1881 – Epe, January 24, 1948) was a versatile Dutch artist, known for his work as a designer, potter and glass artist. From a young age he developed a great love for drawing and painting, with life in and around the Zeeuwse Oosterschelde, with fish, seaweed and sea anemones, forming a lasting source of inspiration.
At the age of 15, Lanooy began as a pupil-painter at the The Hague kilns Rozenburg. Through various workplaces his interest in earthenware grew, after which he learned the craft of pottery in Gouda and worked at Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland. Later he settled in Amsterdam and worked, among others, for the Wed. N.S.A. Brantjes pottery in Purmerend.
Between 1900 and 1906 Lanooy was active as an independent artist, while also working for several earthenware factories. In 1906 he joined the Haga earthenware factory in Purmerend as designer and aesthetic leader. Here he stood out for his innovative glaze experiments, including the use of lustre glaze, which gave his work a characteristic iridescent sheen.
His decorations, often applied to hand-turned vases, are heavily influenced by nature and Eastern art. Motifs such as (fantasy) fish, jellyfish, butterflies, dragons and floral and plant forms recur regularly. After his period in Purmerend, Lanooy further developed as an independent potter and glass artist, with his work to this day cherished for its unique style and use of color.
