Description from the seller
Elephant incense burner.
Elephants play a rich symbolic role in Chinese incense burners.
Symbolism of the elephant in Chinese culture
Luck & peace — The Chinese word for elephant (象, xiàng) sounds the same as the word for "luck" or a favorable sign. Elephants are therefore seen as bringers of luck and positive energy.
Strength & stability — The elephant figuratively carries the world on its back; on incense burners this symbolizes a solid, protective presence in the home or temple.
Wisdom & long life — Buddhist influence (via India and Tibet) strengthened the association with wisdom, patience and a long life.
Feng shui — An elephant with an upward-trumpeting trunk attracts luck and prosperity; with a downward trunk it protects the home.
Buddhist connection
In Buddhism the white elephant is sacred — it represents the birth of the Buddha (Queen Maya dreamed of a white elephant). On incense burners elephants therefore often appear as bearers of a lotus, pagoda, or incense holder on their backs, emphasizing the connection between the earthly and the divine.
The incense burner is in good used condition with signs of age. (See photos)
