Description from the seller
Antique Ottoman wall fountain (Lavabo) – Copper & Brass – Hand-forged – 18th/19th century
On offer is a magnificent, antique wall fountain from the Ottoman Empire (likely present-day Turkey or the Balkan region). Such vessels were used in bourgeois or noble houses for hand washing.
The piece impresses with an elaborate material combination of copper and brass. The body features a masterfully hand-forged wall mounting with striking, flowing gadroons (beadwork) that give the object a plastically rich depth.
Details:
• Material: copper body with brass applications. The neck bears fine, engraved floral arabesques typical of the Islamic cultural sphere. The inside is traditionally tinned (protective layer).
• Style/Epoch: Ottoman Baroque (18th to early 19th century).
• Condition: Authentic, uncleaned field-find condition with beautiful patina. Contemporary repair traces are present (solder joints at the outlet and mounting), which is common for usable objects of this age and underscores the authenticity. The original brass faucet is present.
• Dimensions:
– Height: 37 cm
– Diameter at middle (belly): ca. 15 cm
– Diameter at top (opening): 10 cm
– Diameter at bottom: 6.5 cm
Summary:
• Origin: Ottoman Empire (Turkey / Balkans).
• Material: Copper & brass.
• Special features: Complete with lid and faucet; rich engraving on the neck.
• Collectors’ value: A decorative piece of Oriental metalwork that is of interest to collectors of Islamica as well as an exclusive decorative object.
