Description from the seller
Ancient Chinese archaic funerary vessel, Shang Dynasty (1600-1046 BCE)
This bronze funerary vessel, of Fangjia form, dates from the Shang Dynasty (1600-1046 BCE). With a square section and four feet, it is adorned with decorative motifs characteristic of the period, including Taotie and Kui representations set against a Leiwen background. A handle embellished with a mule head in the round completes this masterpiece.
The vase was created using an exceptional technique: a double fusion of materials (bronze and gilded metal), an innovative process for its time. The visible joints and the use of multiple molds attest to remarkable artisanal mastery.
An excerpt from La Gazette Drouot magazine, titled “Archaïquement vôtre,” highlights the cultural and artistic importance of this object in the hierarchical and religious society of Bronze Age China. The excerpt is included with the photos.
Additionally, a photo of the vase in the condition in which it was recovered prior to cleaning is also available to document the authenticity and history of the object.
