Peridot, also called chrysolite, is a particularly pure variety of the mineral olivine. The pale green, transparent mineral is used as a gemstone.

Peridot is the magnesium-rich variety of olivine (forsterite) with a composition approaching Mg2SiO4. Its crystals are orthorhombic, and its hardness is slightly lower than that of quartz.

Peridot is bright green in color, ranging from yellow-green to olive green. Brownish varieties are also known. Peridot is sometimes confused with emerald and other green gemstones, such as chrysoberyl, diopside, moldavite, as well as garnet (demantoid), quartz (prasiolite, prasem) and tourmaline varieties (cromolite, verdelite).

Peridot is already mentioned in the Old Testament (as pitdah), and in ancient Rome the stone was valued as the “evening emerald” because it easily brightens under lamplight. In the Middle Ages, Peridot often formed part of church jewelry; presumably Peridot stones were brought to Europe by Crusaders. The stone was credited with healing powers, as well as the power to ward off evil spirits.
