Kurumba - Burkina Faso
This mask belongs to the least well-known type of Kurumba masks. With a clear influence
from the Mossi (Karaneda mask) in the superstructure, the Dan (Bagle mask) in the face, and the Dogon
in the overall design, it consists of a face with tubular eyes from which two curved horns emerge,
joining at their tips to a flat panel on which a sculpture is carved. The entire mask is painted with
vegetable dyes, in white and red triangles. It was worn exclusively by the family of the deceased
at his funeral and during the festival of the dead.
