Description from the seller
Bronze candlestick holder – Saint Christopher carrying the Child Jesus – Flanders, 19th century
Rare bronze candlestick depicting Saint Christopher bearing the Child Jesus on his shoulder.
The saint is shown walking, eyes closed, holding the staff (now incomplete at the upper part) which ended in a finial intended to receive the candle.
The Child, blessing, rests on the saint's left shoulder.
The whole rests on a wide circular base with a strong rim.
This typology belongs to a well-defined corpus, derived from the Mannleinleuchter produced from the end of the 15th century in the old Netherlands.
These are the “candlesticks with a figure” where the figure itself serves as the carrying shaft.
An identical example, dated around 1600–1630, is kept at Stoneacre (Kent, Great Britain), inv. NT 863878, confirming the formal lineage of this model with ancient Nordic productions.
Solid cast, with a beautiful old brown-gold patina and coherent wear and oxidation.
An old loss at the level of the upper finial.
Signs of use inside the bobèche and on the plate, consistent with its function.
The photos are an integral part of the object's description and complement its presentation. They allow one to appreciate its condition and features. Please examine them carefully before bidding.
The item will be carefully packed and shipped with a tracking number to ensure fast and secure delivery.
Happy bidding!
