Description from the seller
Pair of silver Holy Oils boxes – 19th century - France
Set consisting of two liturgical ampoules in solid silver, intended to contain the holy oils used in Catholic sacraments (anointing of the sick, baptism, confirmation, ordination).
Each ampoule is engraved:
• O.S → Oleum Sanctum (oil of the catechumens or holy oil)
• S.C → Sanctum Chrisma ( holy chrism)
The lids are topped with a raised Latin cross, applied, with a hammered decoration in the recessed areas.
A sober and elegant finish, typical of 19th-century liturgical metalwork.
The two boxes are linked by a central hinge, an original system, allowing practical liturgical transport.
Inner surface gilt by fire (vermeil) to protect the consecrated oils – the gilding still clearly visible.
Presented in their original old case, black bound, blue velvet interior.
Brass clasp functional.
Very good overall condition for their age.
Normal signs of old liturgical use: micro-scratches, patina, small marks visible in the photos.
Hinges solid, lids functional.
Old case with wear consistent with age (corners rubbed, velvet marked).
The photos are an integral part of the object description and complement its presentation. They allow you to appreciate its condition and characteristics. Please examine them carefully before any commitment.
The item will be carefully packed and shipped with a tracking number to ensure fast and secure delivery.
