Beautiful large Russian Orthodox icon, 19th-century estimate

This is a Russian Orthodox cruciform icon (often called the “crucifixion icon with feasts and saints”). It combines:

- A central brass cross (crucifix) that is removable
- Surrounded by painted panels (icons) depicting various saints and feasts

The central cross has a text on the back in Old Russian:

Approximately something like:

“Крест хранитель всей вселенной,
крест красота церкви,
крест верных утверждение,
крест ангелов слава”

Translated:

“The cross is the guardian of the whole universe,
the cross is the beauty of the church,
the cross is the affirmation (power) of the faithful,
the cross is the glory of the angels.”

Around the cross you see several smaller panels:

- Upper left: the Theotokos (Mary) with Child – one of the most important Orthodox depictions
- Upper right: a scene from the life of Christ (possibly the burial or the Resurrection)
- Sides: standing saints (often apostles, martyrs or patron saints)
- Bottom: groups of saints and possibly donors or specific saintly legends

This composition makes the icon a kind of “summary of faith” in visual form.

The icon comes with a stand of 50 cm in height
