Description from the seller

Superb Teke figurine
Democratic Republic of the Congo
Height: 26.5 cm
Max width: 5 cm
Height on base: 29 cm
Estimated period: late 19th century
Provenance: Patrick Peire (Bruges); André Vanhecke (gallery The African Connection); Scott Bergmans (Lommel); Auction house Bonhams - Cornette de St- Cyr (Brussels) Lot no. 98

In Teke country, fetishes occupy a prominent place. Their use, based on magic, rests on the notions of buti. Shaped anthropomorphically, they are used to treat illnesses, to ensure fertility, to protect, or to promote hunting and fishing. The cavity allows the nganga, the diviner, to imbue the statue with magical ingredients and substances – formerly covered with a earth matrix – so that it can guarantee its prerogatives.

This very fine Teke fetish, rarely so well preserved, will be sold with its invoice from the Bonhams auction house at the buyer’s request.

The last three photographs show a Teke fetish practitioner and a Teke chief wearing his copper necklace.
