Description from the seller

Beautiful and rare figurative axe "nsésu" Pende
Democratic Republic of the Congo
Length of the handle: 42 cm
Maximum width: 27 cm
Period: early 20th century
Provenance: Galerie Art Classique - Belgium

The axes of this type were the insignia of office for men such as professional sculptors, chiefs, and priests. Worn over the shoulder and held in one hand, they served to emphasize the special status of their owner (Elsen, De Fer et De fierté, 2003; Roberts, Joyce and Berns (eds.), Striking Iron: The Art of African Blacksmiths, 2019; Westerdijk, African Metal Implements, 1984).

Superb axe adorned with a mask and two small horns at the back of the handle. The "tigrée" blade characteristic of the Congo. Excellent provenance.

Handle and face slightly cracked. See photographs.
