Cassina - Vico Magistretti - Sofa - Maralunga - Leather

The Maralunga three-seater by Vico Magistretti for Cassina: not just a sofa, but an architecture of relaxation, born in 1973 out of a creative quarrel. Cesare Cassina, exasperated, breaks the back of a prototype; Magistretti smiles and sees the revolution. From that gesture came the bicycle-chain mechanism (patented), hidden in the heart of the upholstery, that lets you raise or lower each headrest with one finger. A click and the sofa transforms: from formal living room to deep nest, from conversation to horizontal lounging. The leather is Extra Tobacco color, hand-stitched, as soft as a glove and as sturdy as an English saddle.

The structure?

Powder-coated steel tubes, matte black ABS bases, suspensions with 70 mm elastic belts: a motorcycle frame under a cloud-like cushion. Inside: Bayfit foam of varied density, layers of dacron, virgin polyester wadding. The result? You sit down and the body disappears, the spine thanks you, time slows down. Generous measurements: 238 cm in length, 90 cm in depth, backrest height 70/103 cm (low/high), seat 45 cm from the floor, perfect for legs crossed or extended.

The cushions are removable, the leather cleans with a damp cloth, the inner cover is washable. You can add the coordinated pouf and obtain an infinite chaise-longue. Golden Compass Award 1979, present at MoMA, photographed in thousands of homes from Milan to Malibu. And yet it remains humble: it doesn’t shout, it whispers. It’s the sofa you never tire of looking at and which, after twenty years, still seems freshly released from the Carate Brianza workshop.
