Pair of antique late Louis XV/Transition period chests from the Netherlands, circa 1775–1785, built from oak and mahogany with Bahia rosewood veneer and brass fittings, measuring 12.2 × 20.2 × 11.7 cm, in good used condition with minor signs of age.
Description from the seller
An extremely elegantly designed and identically paired set of caskets manufactured during the Dutch late Louis XV/Transition period around 1770-1780.
These caskets were made to store luxurious items, such as in this case; tobacco in the example with a loose solid mahogany inner lid with a brass knop. And tea in the example with the compartment division, in which originally removable metal compartments/bushings with brass lids had sat, which have presumably been removed because the metal was corroded, something that occurs more often.
Often tea & tobacco caskets were produced as single pieces; it can therefore be regarded as a unique item when it concerns an authentic pair and moreover 18th-century pieces!
The caskets are constructed from solid oak and mahogany, veneered with exotic Bahia rosewood and edged with hard edges of rosewood and/or padauk wood. The handles and keyholes are original and decorated with, among other things, various S- and C-scrolls, rocaille motifs, pearl borders, floral and foliate motifs.
In the close-up, the round nut with a slot for a special screwdriver is beautifully visible. Also visible are the authentic (hand) saw marks in the oak of the lid!
In the past, the brass hinges, locks, and hasps of both caskets have been neatly replaced.
The caskets have a wonderful deep warm orange color and a lovely satin glaze!
A special and beautiful set that is decorative, but also certainly usable for storing and presenting loose tea, tea bags, or coffee cups!
The photos, in addition to the extensive description, form part of the description. If you have any questions before you bid, please contact the auctioneer/expert.
The object will be well packaged and shipped insured!!!
