Description from the seller
Antique silver snuff box from Austria:
Origin: Vienna
Maker: Unknown
Other hallmarks: 2X ZII, Dutch import mark for 2nd quality silver 835/1000.
Period 1815-1900
In the period 1815 and 1866 Venice was strongly connected with Austria. In this period several silversmiths from Vienna and other cities within the German-speaking part of the kingdom drew inspiration from this eccentric city. The box probably comes from Vienna, because this city was specifically known for producing scenes of Italy.
This snuff box is most likely a unique piece. The snuff box is decorated with an engraving of Piazza San Marco, which is still a very visited tourist location today. In the scene the square is visible with the Doge’s Palace on the left. There is also a cloud-filled sky formed with flying birds. Furthermore there are on the right side two pillars. Italian figures also walk across the square, giving it a lively appearance. The back is also beautifully worked with a clean engraved pattern, typical of Viennese silver craftsmanship. By the way the engravings are still in good condition. Moreover it has a gilt interior to prevent oxidation. It is a nice addition for collectors of snuff boxes or antique silver from continental Europe.
