The mineral Topaz, also known under the misleading trade names Finder’s Diamond, Killiecrankie Diamond, Mogok Diamond, Saxon Diamond and Slave Diamond[6], is a common island silicate with the chemical composition Al2[6][(F,OH)2|SiO4]. The fluorine (F) and hydroxide ions (OH) given in parentheses can substitute for one another in the formula (substitution, diadochy), but always in the same proportion relative to the other components of the mineral. An F-free OH- analogue is known as a synthetic compound.[7]

Topaz crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system and typically develops well-formed and sometimes very broad-faced crystals with short- to long-prismatic or columnar habit and a vitreous luster on the surfaces. In pure form it is colorless and transparent. However, due to multiple light refractions caused by lattice defects or polycrystalline growth, it can also appear white and take on yellow, pink to brownish-red, violet, pale blue and pale green colors, with transparency accordingly decreasing.

With a Mohs hardness of 8, topaz belongs to the hard minerals and serves as the reference on the Mohs scale, which reaches up to 10 (diamond). Like diamond, it is also brittle and, on the base plane (001), very easy to cleave along perfectly smooth fracture surfaces, often already indicated by cleavage lines in the stone. Irregularly broken topazes exhibit uneven to weakly conchoidal fracture surfaces.
