Oracle Galukoji, a Pende object from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, from a private collection, measuring 23 cm high, 1 cm deep and 1 cm wide, weighing 1 g, in good condition.
Description from the seller
Belgians colonial collection, brought back after a business trip in the 1960s
The Pende Galukoji oracle, practiced by the Pende of the Democratic Republic of Congo, is a divinatory system that occupies a central place in resolving conflicts and making community decisions. Unlike ritual masks, Galukoji relies on a set of symbolic objects — often figurines, shells, or natural elements — manipulated by a diviner to interpret the messages of ancestors and spirits.
This ritual, both sacred and practical, enables diagnosing the causes of misfortune, identifying those responsible for transgressions, or validating important choices for the community. The diviner, intermediary between the visible and the invisible, uses Galukoji to restore social and spiritual balance, drawing on an in-depth knowledge of symbols and oral traditions.
The oracle thus illustrates the holistic dimension of the Pende culture, where spirituality, justice, and ancestral memory intertwine to guide individuals and strengthen group cohesion.
