Ghitta Carell (1899-1972) was a renowned Hungarian photographer who became a naturalized Italian citizen, known as the 'queen of portrait photography'.
Active mainly between the two world wars, she worked in Rome where she became the official portraitist of the aristocracy and of prominent political figures, including the House of Savoy and Mussolini.
Her style was characterized by painterly influences and a glamour reminiscent of Hollywood, making her portraits icons of the twentieth century.
Her work is distinguished by meticulous retouching techniques applied directly to the exposed plate.
