Masque de course incendie, a Dan mask from Côte d’Ivoire, provenance Collection privée.
Description from the seller
Dance Mask – Dan – Côte d’Ivoire
A mask of movement and power, designed for trial, speed and ritual performance.
Dance mask attributed to the Dan of Côte d’Ivoire, belonging to the category of functional masks used during ritual competitions and ceremonial races. These masks, among the most spectacular in the Dan corpus, were worn by young men selected for their endurance, agility and physical mastery.
The elongated shape of the face, the narrow eyes, the open mouth and the aerodynamic structure reflect a design directly linked to movement. The use of red pigments, associated with energy, vitality and strength, enhances the visual impact of the mask in action. The textile elements and the aged patina attest to real use, in a ritual context, and not to late or decorative production.
Among the Dan, these running masks participated in public events intended to channel vital forces, strengthen communal cohesion and demonstrate the physical and moral superiority of the wearer. Their rarity is due to their fragility, intensive use and the fact that they were rarely preserved after their ritual cycle.
