Mask - Lega - DR Congo

The Lega mask, associated with the Bwami initiatic society among the Lega of the Democratic Republic of Congo, embodies a dimension that is both pedagogical and spiritual. Unlike other African masks, it is generally not worn on the face, but presented as an object of contemplation during ceremonies.
Sculpted in ivory or wood, this mask is distinguished by its minimalist style, often devoid of superfluous ornaments, highlighting stylized human features. It symbolizes moral values, wisdom and the stages of initiation within Bwami, an institution that structures the social and spiritual life of the Lega.
Its role is above all didactic: it serves as a visual support to teach ethical principles, proverbs and the founding narratives of the community. Thus, the Lega mask of Bwami transcends its aesthetic function to become a tool for transmitting knowledge and a guardian of social balance.
