Circular Daum Nancy salt cellar in multistratified glass from circa 1910, part of the Winter Landscape series, 5 cm diameter and 3 cm high, yellow ground with grisaille forest decoration, signed with the Lorraine cross under the base, in good used condition with minor age-related wear.
Description from the seller
Precious salt cellar (or salt holder) of circular shape in multi-layered artistic glass, a miniature masterpiece of the Daum Nancy Manufacture, dating to circa 1910. This piece belongs to the iconic "Winter Landscape" series, reproduced here with extraordinary meticulousness at a scale of only 3 cm in height.
Despite the mignon format, the execution quality is identical to the museum vases of the same series:
- Multi-layered Glass with "Vitrifications": The body has a background of intense saffron yellow (twilight sky) enriched by hot inclusions of white and grayish glass powders that imitate snow on the ground.
- Enameled Grisaille Decoration: A dense forest of bare trees is hand-painted with black and brown enamels along the entire circumference. The precision of the stroke, despite the small size, is astonishing.
- Grind Finish: The surface is acid-etched to obtain a satin (matte) effect that evokes winter frost.
- Author: Daum Nancy (signed with the Lorraine Cross, meticulously painted in black enamel under the base).
- Era: Circa 1910.
- Condition: Good. Glass intact, no chipping or signs of wear. The enamel has some losses consistent with age.
"Miniature-use" items like this salt cellar are among the most sought-after pieces at international auctions. Often part of prestigious dining sets of the era, these small objects are today considered jewels of art glass and represent a safe investment.
