The lid features an exquisite, hand-painted scene of a traditional Russian "Troika" (a three-horse carriage) racing through a snowy landscape. The artwork is executed in fine egg tempera with intricate gold leaf detailing (typical Palekh "probela" technique) on a rich burgundy-red background speckled with gold "snow" dust.
