Box - papier-mâché - 1927 Palekh box

A stunning example of authentic Russian folk art, this oval-shaped lacquer box originates from the famous village of Palekh. The lid features an exquisite, hand-painted scene of a traditional Russian "Troika" (a three-horse carriage) racing through a snowy landscape. The artwork is executed in fine egg tempera with intricate gold leaf detailing (typical Palekh "probela" technique) on a rich burgundy-red background speckled with gold "snow" dust. The interior is finished with a deep black lacquer. The piece is signed and dated in the lower right corner: "Palekh, 1927". Key Features: Origin: Palekh, USSR/Russia. Technique: Hand-painted tempera on papier-mâché, layered with high-gloss lacquer and gold leaf. Subject: Traditional Winter Troika. Dimensions: 14 x 7.7 x 4.5 cm. Condition: Good vintage/antique condition with minor signs of age-related wear, which add to its authenticity. An excellent addition to any collection of fine lacquerware or Russian art.
