Two Danish earthenware figurines attributed to Otto Detlefsen, measuring 12 cm high, 6 cm wide, and 5 cm deep per piece, in very good condition and dating from ca. 1930–1950 in a Scandinavian Deens design style.
Description from the seller
Otto Detlefsen (1886–1963) – Set of 2 Danish earthenware figures – portrait style – approx. 1930–1950
A characterful and rare set of two expressive earthenware figures, attributed to the Danish ceramic artist Otto Detlefsen. These sculptural objects show a strongly stylized, almost folkloric formal language and are executed in a warm, dark-brown to black glaze with incised decorations.
The figures – a man and a woman – are fashioned in a powerful, almost naive style, with the faces subtly worked and the emphasis on pose, clothing and pattern. The decorative motifs are hand-engraved and recall traditional Scandinavian textile patterns, giving the pieces an unmistakably ethnographic and artisanal character.
This type of work fits within the Danish studio-ceramics tradition of the mid-20th century, in which functionality and art object converge. Otto Detlefsen is known for his robust, expressive ceramics with a distinct signature in form and surface treatment.
Not all works by Detlefsen were signed, which is not uncommon with this kind of studio ceramics.
Condition:
Both figures are in very good condition with no chips, cracks or restorations. Minor signs of use consistent with age.
Dimensions (per piece):
Height: approx. 12 cm
Width: approx. 6 cm
Depth: approx. 5 cm
Total weight: 502 g
A distinctive and decorative duo with a strong presence — very suitable for collectors of Scandinavian design, studio ceramics and mid-century folk art. Very scarce and hard to find in this beautiful condition and thus fall into the higher price range.
Shipping:
Carefully packaged with smart shipping, registered + insured, sent with track & trace.
