Description from the seller

Beautiful sculpture depicting the head of Emperor Marcus Aurelius from the second century AD. The work is crafted using ancient sculpting techniques in Carrara marble powder.

Discovered in the ancient Roman city of Tarraco (Tarragona today in Spain). This head represents the emperor and philosopher Marcus Aurelius. Successor of Antoninus Pius, it culminates with the so-called Golden Age of the Roman Empire, in office between the years 161-180 AD. His historical philosophical education enabled him to confront a difficult realm marked by invasions, epidemics and betrayals by his generals. He carried out administrative reforms benefiting the most needy sectors of society. During the arduous military campaigns, he wrote his philosophical work in Greek, “Meditations.”

The original piece is preserved at the National Archaeological Museum of Tarragona, Spain, in the ancient Roman city.

The indicated dimensions are intended to include the base, if present.
