Content & concept
Snowmen gathers 8 previously unpublished black-and-white photographs taken by David Lynch in the early 1990s in the suburbs of Boise, Idaho — his hometown.
The snowmen are photographed melting in front of snow-covered houses, viewed through a car window (window reflections sometimes appear in the images).
Lynch expresses his obsessive fascination with the sinister beauty of ephemeral objects from American popular culture — these snow sculptures slowly decomposing, losing their human form, evoking in mood the dark tones of Eraserhead (1977).
In summary:
Original unique edition and sold out with a limited print run.
This book is particularly valuable for several cumulatively compelling reasons.
- It is a limited edition of 6,000 copies, now sold out on AbeBooks
- Co-published by two reference institutions — Steidl (the world’s most prestigious photography publisher) and the Fondation Cartier, published for the first time for this exhibition.
- Since his passing on January 15, 2025, David Lynch works have seen a strong price increase, especially limited editions like Snowmen.
Condition: Excellent, interior very fresh, free from annotations and dog-eared pages. Cover corners still sharp. Dust jacket undamaged, with minimal signs of handling, slightly rubbed at the corners. The security tag for this book is still present on its last page.
