Description from the seller

Ancient religious icon on board – Work of Byzantine tradition, Saint Nicholas.

General description:

Exceptional religious icon painted on wooden panel, depicting a saint bishop—likely Saint Nicholas—according to traditional iconography of the Orthodox Church. The work stands out for its strong spiritual charge, archaic aesthetics, and material authenticity, evidenced by natural wear and patina accumulated over time.

It is a devotional piece, conceived not only as an artistic object but as an element of worship and contemplation.

Technical characteristics:

Technique: Egg tempera or tempera on wood
Support: Solid panel assembled with visible back reinforcements
Dimensions: Approximately 390 x 270 mm approx.
Estimated period: Possibly 18th–19th centuries (estimate based on style and wear)
Origin: Byzantine/Orthodox tradition (Eastern Europe or the Eastern Mediterranean)

Condition:

Significant wear in line with its age
Losses of polychromy and visible craquelure
Structural cracks in the wood
Possible restorations or ancient interventions

Artistic description:

The saint is depicted frontally, following the hieratic canons of Byzantine art. He wears an elaborately adorned episcopal mitre and holds a book decorated with symbolic motifs, while blessing with the right hand.

Several key elements stand out:

Radiant halo highlighting his holiness
Liturgical vestments with cross motifs
Insscriptions in Greek or Cyrillic characters, partially visible

Secondary figures at the top, possibly Christ and the Virgin, in a typical composition of episcopal consecration
The visual language is deeply symbolic, prioritizing the spiritual over realism.

Historical context:

Byzantine icons have been, for centuries, fundamental elements in Orthodox liturgy and in the private life of the faithful. These pieces were considered “windows to heaven,” mediators between the divine and the human.

The technique used, together with the wooden support and back reinforcements, is consistent with traditional production from monastic or artisanal workshops of Eastern Europe.

Visible wear is not a defect but a direct testament to its devotional use and age.

Value and exclusivity:

One-of-a-kind piece, not reproducible
High decorative and spiritual value
Interest for collectors of sacred art, antiques, and Byzantine art
Aesthetic authenticity marked by the passage of time.

Additional notes:

Professional evaluation (expert appraisal) is recommended for more precise dating and attribution. The piece is sold as is, preserving its original state without aggressive modern interventions.

Ideal for:

Collectors of religious art
High-end interior design with historical pieces
Spaces with a spiritual or patrimonial character.
