Herkimer diamonds are double-terminated quartz crystals discovered in exposed dolomite outcrops in and around Herkimer County, New York, and in the Mohawk River Valley in the USA.
They are not diamonds; the name "diamond" derives from their apparent clarity and well-formed faces.
Since the first occurrences were in the village of Middleville or the town of Little Falls, the crystal is also called the Middleville Diamond or Little Falls Diamond.
Herkimer diamonds gained wide fame after workers discovered them in large quantities during dolomite mining in the Mohawk River Valley in the late 18th century.
Geologists found exposed dolomite in the outcrops of Herkimer County and began mining there, which led to the designation "Herkimer Diamond".
Double-terminated quartz crystals are found worldwide.
Shipping as insured registered mail.
