Nephrite is a mixed crystal in the interlocking solid-solution series of the minerals tremolite and actinolite. It is not recognized as a distinct mineral by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA).
When nephrite occurs as a mass of interwoven microcrystalline fibers, it is called jade. This material, also referred to as nephrite jade, is processed into accordingly desirable jewelry stones and decorative objects, but chemically it differs significantly from jade, which is predominantly jadeite. The colors of nephrite are caused by chromium and iron and range from gray-green to dark green to almost black; the color can also shift to reddish-brown.
The term nephrite comes from the Greek νεφρός nephros and translates to kidney. An old folk belief attributes healing and strengthening properties to the stone, especially for the kidneys, urinary tract, and bladder. Esoteric practitioners also believe it to have effects as a healing stone for vision, creativity, among others, as well as a protective stone, although these claims are not scientifically proven.
Stone axes made of nephrite were highly valued in Neolithic Europe and, due to their rarity, served as valuable tools.
