Description from the seller
Christ the Saviour (Pantocrator)
Tempera and oil on a solid wood panel, reinforced with two original rear crosspieces.
Russian or Ukrainian school. 19th century.
Dimensions: 89 × 53 × 3 cm.
Representation of Christ in full-length, standing, blessing with the right hand and holding a cross or staff with the left. He wears a brown-reddish tunic and a green mantle with broad folds, symbolizing His divinity and eternal life. The face, frontal and serene, is highlighted by a solemn gaze framed by a circular nimbus against a background of earth-toned and bluish hues that add spiritual depth.
The composition follows the traditional model of the Pantocrator or Savior of the World, characteristic of 19th-century Orthodox religious painting, especially in Russian and Ukrainian workshops. The arched format suggests that it originally formed part of an iconostasis, probably in a lateral position.
The work retains its original patina, natural craquelure, and a central vertical crack consistent with the age of the support. It shows no visible overpaint and maintains structural solidity thanks to the original crosspieces.
A piece of great devotional power and chromatic harmony, a representative example of the spirituality and formal sobriety of 19th-century Orthodox iconography.
Period: 19th century.
Conservation state: good, with antique patina and stable structure.
