Invader (1969) - Invasão São Paulo

Print on paper 18 9/10 × 23 3/5 in | 48 × 60 cm Edition of 100 not folded One of the rarest signed maps in circulation, from the gallery where it was originally released with COA of the same. This Invader-São Paulo map was printed in 2011 and accompanied the major urban art exhibition at MASP, the most important museum in Brazil. 100 flat pieces were produced, numbered and signed by the artist, and 4000 folders were distributed to the public during the exhibition. A giant version of this Invader-São Paulo map was exhibited inside the museum alongside installations by artists JR (France), Swoon (United States), Remed (France), Point (Czech Republic), Chu, Defi and Tec (Argentina) and Coletivo Bijari (Brazil). The “De Dentro & De Fora” exhibition proposed that the artists create integrated installations inside the large exhibition hall and that they create an urban project in the city of São Paulo. Invader produced 51 installations with tiles and mosaics on buildings, viaducts and walls in the city, in direct dialogue with the well-known graffiti (pixação) in São Paulo. Following tradition, Invader installed his tiles above the graffiti (pixos), which is why his Invaders were never vandalized by graffiti artists (pixadores). On the Invader-São Paulo map, the areas of the city where the artist's installations are located are marked with characteristic types of graffiti (pixo’s tags). Another interesting fact about the Invaders made in São Paulo was that, upon arriving in Brazil, we invited the artist to visit one of the many “tile cemeteries” that exist here. And some of the tiles that caught Invader's attention were the patterned ones, typical of the 1960s. That is why many of the invaders in São Paulo are assembled with these designs - something rare in the artist's history, who predominantly uses small tiles instead of these 15 x 15 cm models. We are making available an Invader-São Paulo map from our private collection, which is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity, plus an unsigned folder and more information about Invader's participation in the 2011 exhibition in São Paulo
