Black opals occur, just like their differently colored counterparts, as a rounded to knob-like mass with no detectable crystal structure. Their beauty usually becomes apparent only after cutting this material. Characteristic for this form of opals is their opalescence, which is especially evident in intense rainbow flashes. Additionally, the host rock of the opal here is dark, gray to black, which gave it this name.

Black opals form, like other opals, from siliceous fluids that crystallize in sediments or volcanic rocks. Their characteristic shimmer is due to water inclusions inside the interior of this mineral.
