Pair of small limestone Corinthian capitals in antique style, dating to circa 1800–1830, each about 16 cm high and 17.5 cm wide, in very good condition with an old chip at the base of one capital.
Description from the seller
Architectural fragment – Pair of sculpted Corinthian capitals – stone capital
Early 19th century – Circa 1800–1830
France – Eastern-central or southern region
Pair of small capitals carved in limestone, in a archaizing Corinthian style. The decoration, sober and structured, combines relief acanthus leaves, lateral spiral volutes, and, on one of the two examples, a five-petaled flower in frontal position. Although designed as a pair, variations in the treatment of motifs and volumes testify to artisanal work, without mechanical standardization.
Their reduced size, combined with an axial hole at the base, suggests secondary architectural use: altar elements, statue supports, or decorative fragments of an interior decor with religious or historicist inspiration. Their sculpture belongs to the Neo-Gothic or rural Neo-Classical taste, still very active in the early decades of the 19th century.
The capitals show an even patina, accompanied by calcareous concretions, fossilized mosses, and traces of vegetation, resulting from prolonged exposure outdoors. This natural wear, not artificial, reinforces the authenticity of the surfaces and testifies to a long period of burial or exposure to open air.
Note: an old chip affects the base of only one of the two capitals, visible on the lower edge. This damage does not affect stability or legibility of the object.
Condition
Very good overall condition. Old stone, patinated. Mineral concretions and traces of ancient mosses due to prolonged outdoor exposure.
One chip at the base of one capital (visible in the photos). Not restored.
Historical and stylistic conclusion
Typical fragments of a regional production from the early 19th century, these two capitals embody an aesthetic of transition between antique heritage and the historicist reinterpretations of the 19th century. The quality of the patina, irregularity of the details, and evidence of reuse make them objects with strong material presence, both as witnesses to historical architecture and as singular decorative pieces for discerning collectors.
