Description from the seller
Exclusive Set of Two Belgian Mantel Clocks – Art Deco, Solid Marble, 1930s
Editorial footer:
The item for auction is a pair of authentic Belgian mantel clocks, produced in the Art Deco current, originating from the early 20th century (the 1930s). Both pieces represent high-quality stone craftsmanship, made from natural, polished marble. Each clock features a geometric, modernist form and meticulous finishing of details.
I. Material and aesthetic analysis
• Material: Natural marble, solid, unpolished.
• Brown marble (Marmor Rouge Belge / Breccia): used in the larger clock and on the side bands of the smaller one; deep, rusty tones with white and ocher veins, reminiscent of rock formations.
• Black marble (Noir Fin): main body of the smaller clock and corners of the larger one; deep black with subtle white veins, giving a luxurious character.
• Style: Art Deco, geometric, modernist, typical of the 1930s.
II. Technical specifications and dimensions
1. Monumental model (brown base)
• Dimensions: 33 × 20 × 9 cm
• Weight: 5.166 kg
• Dial: brass-colored dial in antique gold, black Arabic numerals with a squared typeface, central part matte black.
• Mechanism: spring-driven, wound from the front with a key; original key included.
• Condition: mechanism complete, dial partially incomplete (missing hour hand), stone in ideal condition, undamaged.
2. Contrasting model (black base)
• Dimensions: 30 × 18.5 × 7.5 cm
• Weight: 3.923 kg
• Dial: light, cream-colored dial protected by convex glass in a brass frame, Arabic numerals with a gentler outline.
• Mechanism: manually wound from behind the clock using built-in butterflies, no key required.
• Condition: complete, marble in pristine condition, mirror-polished.
III. Construction details
• Construction: box-like, from thick marble slabs (1.5–2 cm).
• Interior: raw stone structure, confirming the mineral’s authenticity.
• Acoustics: the larger clock is equipped with a spiral gong, producing a deep, metallic sound with a long resonance.
• Stability: weight over 9 kg provides resistance to substrate vibrations.
IV. Summary
This set is a unique opportunity for Art Deco collectors and interior decorators seeking authentic items from the era. The differences in winding systems and the absence of one hand on the larger clock have been reflected in the valuation.
Contents of the set:
• Monumental clock 33 cm (brown marble) + dedicated key
• Contrasting clock 30 cm (black marble)
